From Insects by Marlene Huissoud

From insects is a celebration of the use of insects’ material potential. Coming from a family of beekeepers, designer Marlene Huissoud was intrigued by the waste material propolis that was left behind in the insects waste stream. Like Tomas Libertiny's Bee Vessel, a vase created by bees, Huissoud was interested in working in collaboration with bees as co-partners in the design process. Huissoud works with the common honey bee, which produces propolis, - a natural bio-degradable resin. Each year a beekeeper will remove a small quantity of propolis to extract the honey. Due to the size of propolis removed (100g per hive per year) demonstrates how rare and precious this material is.
